1-2-1 Mentors are a team of people with multiple skill sets from education and social care. The whole team share the same desire to improve the lives of each child and support them in reaching their potential. Each member has undergone Safer Recruitment Checks, have up-to-date Level 3 Safeguarding and Child Protection training.

Charmaine Dugdale - Director

Charmaine is the Director of 1-2-1 Mentors and founded the company in 2015 out of a passion for improving the lives of vulnerable children and young people. She started her career as a social worker in London (and holds current HCPC registration) working with children at risk. After setting up and running a Life Skill Project for vulnerable teenage girls, Charmaine then branched into vocational training for young people. She has managed private/public sector training initiatives and was instrumental in the delivery of a high profile training initiative that addressed the training needs of young people in a deprived inner city borough of London. More recently, Charmaine was a Deputy Family Service Manager for Devon County Council, managing the provision for vulnerable children in Exeter and East Devon as well as being involved in the recruitment, selection and supervision of parental support advisors in school’s county wide.

Sheila Ogilvie – Operations Manager

Sheila Ogilvie is a highly experienced Operational Manager, who has worked with Devon’s disadvantaged young people for 35 years. Sheila has dedicated her career to improving the life chances of vulnerable children, working tirelessly to support Devon’s young people, in order to obtain the best outcomes that they can achieve. Throughout the course of her career, Sheila has worked in a number of caring and management roles, encompassing the role of RSW in a residential children’s home, the Inclusion Team, the leaving care support service, the Youth Support Team (focusing on girl’s groups and young Mums), the Devon Intervention Service, the Parent Support Advisory Team, Setting up a social and emotional team in a Pupil Referral Unit and currently an Operations Manager at 1-2-1mentors. Sheila has followed her passion throughout her career and initiated and developed a range of highly valuable programmes. These include packages to support young people leaving care homes, work experience projects, schemes to promote the prevention of exclusion and support systems to promote social and emotional development. Sheila has gained accreditation in Theory behind Practice within Social Care and Management qualifications. Sheila also is a qualified Thrive Practitioner and is a Designated safeguard lead.

Sue Bullock – Secondary Teaching Manager/Coordinator

Sue completed her teacher training at Cardiff University (B Ed Hons/English and Drama) and worked in mainstream secondary schools in London for 18years. During this time, Sue worked in a range of inner city schools, delivering the KS3 curriculum, Entry Level, Functional Skills, GCSE and A Level Examinations. In the roles of Head of Year, Head of Department, Head of House and classroom teacher, Sue has taught a range of pupils, including those with special needs, challenging behaviours and social and emotional difficulties. Sue is passionate about equal opportunities and made a transition into alternative provision, including PRUs, the Medical Team and currently 1-2-1mentors. This has enabled her to gain valuable experience in the field of working with vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils. Sue has worked as the Teacher Coordinator at 1-2-1mentors for 2 years and has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with pupils, parents/carers/schools/referrers and outside agencies.

Frances Harding – Primary Teaching Manager/Coordinator

Frances is the manager for the primary teachers at 1-2-1 Mentors. She qualified as a teacher in 2000 and has since worked in a variety of both mainstream and specialist school settings. Frances was a Specialist Teacher of Emotional Health and Wellbeing in Torbay for ten years where she set up and managed a therapeutic centre working in partnership with local authority schools with the aim of re-engaging pupils in learning. Having qualified as a Thrive practitioner and Thrive trainer Frances has provided extensive training, supervision and mentoring for school staff, social workers, doctors, families and foster carers. Although trained as a primary teacher, Frances’ work as a tutor at Exeter’s Senior Attendance Centre for young offenders has provided her with experience of teaching young people up to the age of 25 years. Frances’ subject specialism is Art & Design and she is skilled in therapeutic approaches to using the creative arts with children and young people.

Kay Thompson – NTP Teacher Manager/English Lead

Kay is one of our National Tutoring Programme Teacher Managers. After studying English Literature and Education at Cambridge University, she qualified as a teacher in 2004 and worked in mainstream schools as an English teacher and Head of English, before moving into the area of Intervention and Alternative Provision. She worked in a Pupil Referral Unit for four years before joining 1-2-1mentors at the end of 2019 as an English teacher. Her role as a Teacher Manager involves overseeing the delivery of the NTP in schools across Devon and she also continues to teach English to a number of students.

Vicky Bell – NTP Teacher Manager / Maths Lead

Vicky is one of the managers and the mathematics lead for the National Tuition Programme at 1-2-1 Mentors. Since qualifying as a teacher, she has worked in mainstream and specialist settings, teaching across the age range from primary to adults. For the past six years Vicky has provided individualised support for pupils with social, emotional, behavioural and medical issues. As a mathematics specialist Vicky has worked as an examiner for a GCSE Exam board.

Bernard Dugdale – NTP Project Manager

Bernard joined the 1-2-1 Mentors team as part of the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) project. This is a time-limited role due to run until the end of July 2021. His background is in general management within the video games and tourism sectors, and business advice, especially to Small & Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). His role is to manage the relationship between 1-2-1 Mentors and the NTP. Particularly to make sure that 1-2-1 Mentors comply with all the necessary programme policies and guidelines, and that 1-2-1 Mentors fulfil all of their reporting obligations to the NTP.
